The Office for Human Research Protections (OHRP) has recently made three impactful webinar recordings available, offering invaluable insights into some of the most pressing topics in research ethics, diversity, and governance. These webinars explore emerging issues in human research, focusing on innovation, inclusivity, and accountability in today’s evolving research landscape.
- The Evolving Landscape of Human Research with AI – OHRP’s 7th annual Exploratory Workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in human research explored AI’s potential applications, risks, and the policies needed to navigate these advancements. The workshop drew over 3,000 global viewers and provided a comprehensive look at how AI can reshape research practices and the ethical considerations involved. Attendees gained essential insights into managing risks associated with AI and how these factors should guide future policy development.
- Advancing Research Participation for LGBTQI+ Individuals – Co-sponsored by OHRP and the NIH’s Sexual & Gender Minority Research Office (SGMRO), this recent webinar focused on advancing diversity and inclusivity in biomedical and socio-behavioral research to improve health outcomes for all. Central to the discussion were strategies for increasing the representation of LGBTQI+ individuals in research. The webinar covered topics such as the evolving understanding of sex and gender, the ethical complexities of conducting research with LGBTQI+ populations, and SACHRP’s recommendations on ensuring equitable research practices.
- On Differing Approaches to Measuring and Ensuring IRB Effectiveness – In collaboration with the FDA, OHRP hosted a session exploring strategies to assess the effectiveness of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) in protecting human subjects. Building on the insights from the 2023 GAO report, this webinar offered expert perspectives on the different approaches to evaluating IRBs’ roles in safeguarding ethical standards in research.
These webinars highlight OHRP’s ongoing efforts to address emerging challenges in research ethics and provide resources to guide researchers and institutions in maintaining high standards of human research protection.
