Observations and Strategies from NSF Plagiarism Investigations

The research community can agree that plagiarism is a global problem. The National Science Foundation (NSF) conducted a thorough review of its funded research to help determine plagiarism prevention strategies for educational institutions. They analyzed 134 plagiarism cases between 2007-2017 and found six common reasons that researchers provided to explain their plagiarism. Reasons included a misunderstanding of citation requirements and carelessness in document preparation.
