Review of ClinicalTrials.gov Modernization

ClinicalTrials.gov is a database of clinical trials funded privately or publicly, used by millions of users monthly. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) is modernizing the website for an improved user experience and accommodating future growth, with an expected launch date of June 2023. The modernized website will have updated search and viewing functionality and look and feel. NLM will host a virtual public meeting on April 25, 2023, to provide more information about the modernization effort. The beta versions of the website and its clinical information submission and management portal have been launched and will continue to be updated based on user testing and feedback. The modernization effort is expected to continue into 2024.

In addition to the website switch in June, ongoing enhancements to the system will also include:

  • Updates to the ClinicalTrials.gov beta API based on user feedback.
  • The release of a modernized Protocol Registration and Results System (PRS) in beta for data submitters to enter actual trial registration information for submission to ClinicalTrials.gov.

The current website will still be accessible after the launch of the modernized site until it is retired in 2024. See the recent blog post by Anna M. Fine, PharmD, MS, Acting Director of ClinicalTrials.gov, for more details, including how to provide feedback and to register for the 2023 ClinicalTrials.gov Modernization Public meeting.
