About this Course

This course provides a fast-paced review of the ISO 45001 specification with commentary on the intent and implementation of ISO 45001 based on real-world experience. This course equips the student to evaluate their organization against ISO 45001 requirements to identify gaps and evaluate the resources needed for implementation and improvement.

The course begins in Module 1 – Introduction by explaining the need for a continuous improvement system to properly protect employees from the safety risks applicable to biotech companies. It provides a short history of the progress made since the creation of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).  The principles of plan, do, check, act that underlie the ISO 45001 specification are presented in the first module. The following modules describe the requirements of the ISO 45001 specification along with recommendations on how these requirements can be met by an organization aiming to become ISO-certified.

Course Content

Module 1 - Introduction

This module presents the typical motivations and benefits connected with an organization’s commitment to establish an ISO 45001 OH&S system. It helps learners obtain a high-level understanding of the concepts and principles underlying ISO 45001, and how the ISO 45001 elements harmonize with quality, environmental, and other ISO standards.

Module 2 – Planning Elements

This module explores the planning elements from ISO 45001. It considers how to identify hazards and prioritize them according to risks. Further, it covers how to set safety and health improvement objectives and associated action plans.

Module 3 – Support and Operation Elements

This module discusses the elements that support and implement the occupational health and safety (OH&S) planning requirements developed in previous elements. It clarifies the ISO requirements for using hierarchy of controls. The presenter also explains the procurement and contractors elements.
