Finding a Fit for Your Idea at the NIH

This module provides learners with an overview of the NIH organizational structure, which is important to be familiar with as part of the process of identifying where to submit a proposal to. The module then reviews the different NIH funding mechanisms.  The module concludes with ways learners can plan an approach to NIH program officers.

Getting Set to Submit

This module begins with a review of required site registrations. Learners are then presented with information on how to assess financial readiness for SBIR-STTR grants or contracts. At the end of the module, learners review steps on how to develop a realistic timeline for proposal preparation.

Intellectual Property Matters

This module begins with a discussion of the role of publication in faculty careers. It then transitions to review the Small Business Administration’s policies regarding data rights in SBIR and STTR awards. Leaners will then proceed through an analysis of an Allocation of Rights agreement.  The module concludes with a discussion of business and university rights under the Bayh-Dole Act.

This module provides learners with an overview of key components of small business data and network security. The module also explores the components of an NIH Data Management and Sharing Plan.

Compliance Matters

In this last module of this course, learners are familiarized with the federal requirements associated with conducing research with human subjects as well as animal research. The module includes a discussion of the major components of NIH’s Financial Conflict of Interest policy. The module concludes with an anlysis of potential export control issues in an SBIR or STTR project.
