Job Summary 

The Human Research Protection Program (HRPP) is responsible for the oversight and management of ETSU’s Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) and ensures compliance with applicable policies, accreditation standards, and external regulations for research involving human participants. We help to facilitate human subjects research and make sure it is done safely, ethically, and legally. We take pride in being service-oriented and flexible.

The IRB Education and Training Specialist plays a crucial role in supporting the HRPP by overseeing educational programs, and compliance initiatives, and contributing to the program’s quality and effectiveness. The responsibilities are divided into two broad categories (1) Education/Training and (2) Quality Assurance/Quality Improvement (QA/QI). This position is responsible for developing and implementing educational programs and resources for the research community and performing compliance reviews of research protocols and HRPP records to ensure that the conduct and oversight of research involving human participants comply with applicable regulations and ethical standards. This proactive approach is intended to minimize risks to participants, researchers, and the institution as well as promote a culture of compliance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Knowledge of the higher education environment and university rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of quality assurance and improvement tools and techniques.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to establish rapport and work professionally with a diverse group of students, faculty, staff, and other constituencies.
  • Skilled at event planning, content creation, and communications utilizing brand guidelines.
  • Skilled at gathering data, compiling information, and preparing detailed reports.
  • Ability to extrapolate requirements from regulations and IRB Policies and Procedures to guide the research community.
  • Ability to present complex information engagingly to a variety of audiences
  • Evaluate organizational needs to identify gaps in training.
  • Design and apply assessment tools to measure and track training effectiveness and compliance.
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented with an ability to effectively prioritize multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Strong knowledge and application of human research protection ethics and regulations.
  • Knowledge of research procedures and terminology, research data management, and protocol implementation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software.

 

Required Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, management & marketing, health sciences, or relevant field, and two years full-time experience in higher education or office setting; OR an equivalency of education and/or relevant work experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications 

  1. Bachelor’s degree in communications, management & marketing, health sciences, or relevant field and one-three years of experience working in a higher education setting supporting research compliance or administration.
  2. Experience designing creative content using Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar.
  3. Experience developing and delivering training or educational presentations.
  4. Demonstrated experience in content creation, event coordination, and public speaking.
