On 21 June 2016, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) issued its final policy on the Use of a Single IRB (sIRB) for Multi-Site Research. The policy requires the use of a sIRB of record for research that is NIH-funded, multi-site (more than one site), and non-exempt human subjects research conducted in the U.S. (HHS 2016). After an extension issued by the NIH on 16 June 2017, this policy takes effect 25 January 2018.

As such, the CITI Program has updated the following modules:

  • Hot Topics (ID: 487)
  • Basic IRB Regulations and Review Process (ID: 2)
  • External IRB Review (ID: 16711)
  • Working with the IRB (ID: 16753)
  • HRPP/IRB Policies and Procedures (ID: 16503)

For more information about single, central, and external IRB review, consult the CITI Program’s “External IRB Review” module. CITI Program also offers three modules about sIRB review and administration. The modules cover when an IRB is relying on a sIRB, when an IRB is serving as a sIRB, and the reliance agreement.
