CITI Program, in collaboration with the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), has launched an online course to train students, staff and faculty to return to their campuses safely after closures due to COVID-19. The free course, offered through their online learning platform, is available to any medical school or research institution.
“We are honored to collaborate with the AAMC in this initiative,” says Bharat Krishna, senior vice president and managing director of CITI Program. “With CITI Program’s 20 years of online learning experience, this partnership is an excellent way to provide resources to research and medical school communities as they plan for a safe return to campuses.”
“Individual campuses have been scrambling to quickly come up with policies and procedures for opening,” Curt Civin, M.D., the Associate Dean for Research at University of Maryland School of Medicine.
“To have a centralized, coordinated and curated online course will be an enormous resource for medical schools and research institutions,” said Dr. Civin.
The course was made possible by the contributions of several organizations and includes presenters from:
- University of Maryland School of Medicine
- University of North Texas Health Sciences Center
- Vanderbilt University Medical Center
- Yale University
- Northwestern University
Content was also contributed by Nebraska Medicine, University of Pittsburgh, University of Iowa, and University of Connecticut. Information from U.S. federal agencies, such as the CDC, NIH, FDA, and OSHA are included.
The course covers topics such as background of the disease, how it likely spreads, prevention methods including social distancing and use of personal protective equipment (PPE), laboratory and research hygiene, mental health and well-being tips, among others.
“There is a wealth of information developed at various institutions, including modules authored and presented by Dr. Wilbur Chen,” says Mr. Krishna. Wilbur Chen, M.D., M.S., is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and he serves on Maryland Governor Larry Hogan’s COVID-19 response task force. “Our effort focused on consolidating the information into a useful course,” adds Mr. Krishna.
