The CHIPS and Science Act of 2022 (Section 10337) directs the National Science Foundation (NSF) to require several additions to Responsible and Ethical Conduct of Research (RECR)/Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training while also expanding the training to faculty and other senior personnel. The additions include “training to raise awareness of potential research security threats.” This course outlines the role of research security in RECR/RCR in compliance with the CHIPS Act and NSF requirements.
This content draws from the NSF SECURE Center’s research security condensed training module. It provides training for senior/key personnel and non-senior/non-key personnel. The information for senior/key personnel is abbreviated, as the topics are addressed in depth in the research security training that NSF and other agencies require senior/key personnel to take prior to proposal submission, consistent with the CHIPS Act. It is important to note that this material is intended to be an option to augment RECR/RCR training. However, CITI Program recommends its Responsible Conduct of Research and Export Compliance series for in-depth learning on both topics.
