Participatory (or citizen) science—research conducted with or by members of the public—offers powerful opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and community engagement. At the same time, it raises distinct ethical and regulatory considerations that challenge traditional research oversight frameworks. This webinar will describe the meaning of participatory science, explore common ethical issues such as data quality, accountability, labor and compensation, credit, and power dynamics, and examine how these issues intersect with IRB review. Participants will gain practical insight into the unique challenges participatory science presents and learn key considerations for effective IRB oversight.
