OLAW Requests Input on Flexibilities Available to IACUCs for Program Review

The NIH Office of Laboratory Animal Welfare (OLAW) is seeking public input on flexibilities that IACUCs may consider when conducting semiannual program reviews as a way to reduce administrative burden. Responders are asked to address 7 specific flexibilities outlined in the official request for information (RFI). Some examples of the flexibilities include:

  • The program review may be conducted at a convened IACUC meeting with a quorum. It is equally acceptable for the program review to be conducted by a subcommittee with no requirement for a quorum.
  • SOPs need not be reviewed every six months. IACUCs may choose the frequency and method for regular review of animal facility SOPs as part of the overall review of the animal care and use program.
  • IACUCs may review the entire program once every six months or on a staggered schedule.
  • IACUCs may use an AAALAC International site visit to meet the requirements for a program review, provided it meets the requirements of the PHS Policy and AWRs.

See the official request for information for a complete and detailed list of the flexibilities and on how to submit a formal comment. The comment period is open through August 1, 2022.
