About this Course

Responsible international collaboration is a defining characteristic of the U.S. research ecosystem, and the internationality of U.S. research has led to groundbreaking discoveries across scientific disciplines. However, some collaborations can put your research at risk in ways that are not always obvious, and some collaborators may engage in illicit behaviors that violate the norms of responsible behavior. Research security requirements and guidelines provide guardrails to help protect your research while maximizing responsible international collaboration. This module provides an overview of these measures, describes researcher responsibilities and best practices, and examines case studies highlighting real behaviors that led to research security violations. This module focuses on fundamental or open research but does not cover research security measures for classified research.

Organizations may consider different options for delivering research security training to meet agency requirements. This one-module course was created for organizations that want to include research security training as part of their RCR offerings. Organizations must subscribe to both the Research Security and Responsible Conduct of Research series in order to use modules from both series. This module is presented in the same style as CITI Program’s RCR Basic course and includes text-based and audio-visual options. This module is ideal for organizations looking to provide a single research security module in a format familiar to CITI Program learners.
