About this Course

This video-based series explores the Department’s SBIR-STTR program.  Learners begin with an overview of SBIR and STTR and specifically the DOW/DOD and what makes it different. The remaining modules in the course take intensive dives into the proposal itself and the proposal process.

Course Content

DOD/DOW Overview

In this first webinar, learners gain foundational knowledge about SBIR and STTR programs with specific review of the Department’s 12 components that participate. Learners then explore the goals of the SBIR program and the critical technology areas. The webinar includes a discussion of open topics, the technical point of contact (TPOC), and the Department’s evaluation criteria. The module concludes with a review of the Defense SBIR/STTR Innovation Portal.

DOD/DOW Proposal Preparation Intensive – Part 1

In this webinar, learners take the first of two deep dives into the proposal preparation.  The webinar begins with a discussion on the registration process on DSIP. From there, learners then explore starting a new proposal within DSIP. The webinar covers volumes 1-3 within the DSIP proposal process and as appropriate discusses elements important for many of the volumes. The webinar also discusses direct and indirect costs as well as budget and re-budgeting. Learners are walked through key points in constructing a Phase I SBIR budget.

DOD/DOW Proposal Preparation Intensive – Part 2

In this last webinar, learners return to volume 2 of DSIP and taking an in-depth review of elements of this volume including identification/significance, the technical objectives, Phase I statement of work, related work, and commercialization strategy.  Learners also explore a mock competitive analysis as well as a discussion of sales financials and a sample revenue model. This webinar also discusses the key roles in the management team. A discussion of facilities and equipment and subcontractors/consultants follows.  The module ends with a discussion of prior, current, or pending support of similar proposals or awards.
