This course provides higher education faculty, instructional designers, international education professionals, and academic leaders with practical strategies for integrating global and intercultural learning across courses and programs. Learners examine foundational frameworks for global competence, explore Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) as an accessible model for international collaboration, and connect global learning activities to career-readiness competencies such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking, technology, and equity and inclusion. The course also demonstrates how to use backward design, inclusive pedagogy, reflection, and authentic assessment to make global learning intentional, measurable, and accessible to a broader range of students.

Understanding Global Competencies in Higher Education

This module introduces global competence and explains its growing importance in higher education, workforce preparation, and student career readiness. Learners examine the knowledge, skills, and attitudes associated with global and intercultural competence, including cultural humility, and compare frameworks developed by the OECD, AAC&U, and Deardorff. The module also connects global learning to NACE competencies such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking, leadership, and equity and inclusion.

COIL as a Pedagogical Strategy for Global Learning

This module explores Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) as an inclusive, technology-mediated approach that connects students and faculty across countries through shared coursework. Learners examine the defining principles, benefits, and common models of COIL, including shared modules, fully integrated courses, and project-based collaborations. Examples across disciplines illustrate how COIL can build intercultural competence, communication, teamwork, perspective-taking, and applied problem-solving skills while expanding access beyond traditional study-abroad programs.

Aligning COIL with NACE Career Readiness Competencies

This module shows faculty how to connect COIL activities with the eight NACE Career Readiness Competencies and make students’ transferable skill development more visible. Learners practice mapping international team projects, discussions, reflection, peer feedback, and digital collaboration to competencies such as communication, teamwork, critical thinking, professionalism, technology, and equity and inclusion.
