The European Union’s (EU) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is in effect and noncompliance penalties are costly. For example, Google was recently fined $57 million for GDPR violations. France’s National Data Protection Commission (CNIL) concluded that Google was not transparent in how they provided information to users and that they were not validly obtaining permission from users for data processing and ads personalization.
