About this Course

The Handling Allegations of Research Misconduct course introduces the research misconduct process, including the key roles involved and the phases of a misconduct proceeding. Learners will:

  • Distinguish among types of research misconduct.
  • Understand the difference between authorship disputes and plagiarism.
  • Examine the purposes of assessments, inquiries, and investigations.
  • Recognize the practical and procedural challenges throughout the research misconduct process.
  • Learn the difference between honest error and intentional, knowing, or reckless acts.
  • Understand how to apply the criteria for making a finding of research misconduct.

This course is meant to supplement the training provided in CITI Program’s Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) series.

Handling Allegations of Research Misconduct

The Handling Allegations of Research Misconduct course consists of five sections, including Definitions and Key Concepts, Overview of Handling Allegations of Research Misconduct, Inquiry, Investigation, and Reviewing Data. The course objectives include:

  • Identify and define the relevant roles and phases of a research misconduct proceeding.
  • Identify and define the types of research misconduct and explain the difference between authorship disputes and plagiarism.
  • Describe the purpose of an assessment, inquiry, and investigation.
  • Recognize some of the challenges encountered throughout the research misconduct process.
  • Characterize honest error as compared to intentional, knowing, or reckless acts.
  • Apply the criteria for making a finding of research misconduct.
