This course provides a regulatory background, legal obligations, and best practices related to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act’s HITECH Act of 2009 and its effects on business associates, vendors, and others subject to HIPAA. HITECH strengthened the HIPAA Privacy and Security rules, requiring business associates to comply with the HIPAA Security Rule.

Business Associate Roles and Responsibilities – Part 1

This module begins by defining business associates and providing examples of who constitutes a business associate under HIPAA.  It explores situations when business associates are responsible for HIPAA compliance. The module concludes with a discussion on potential penalties for HIPAA noncompliance for business associates.
